Melvin Udall is a surly, obsessive-compulsive and entirely unlikely romance novelist with the meanest mouth in Manhattan. When his neighbour Simon is hospitalised, Melvin is forced to babysit his dog. This unexpected act of kindness reconnects Melvin with those around him, bringing him closer to long-suffering acquaintance and struggling single mother, Carol.
