We are delighted to welcome international best-selling author Louis de Bernières back to Abbeygate for an evening of music, poetry and storytelling.

Louis de Bernières is best known as a world-famous novelist, and has had two of his books made into films, but has been writing poetry since he was twelve, and composing songs since he was seventeen.

He was quite surprised to become a novelist, and was just getting going again as a singer/songwriter when Covid struck.

In this show he reads his poetry, sings his songs, tells jokes and recounts anecdotes, doing what he has always done on and off since he was a young man.

He has always loved the great singer/songwriters that emerged in the 60s and 70s, and was recently described as ‘the English Leonard Cohen’.

Everything he does is about telling stories that move the emotions, and, of course, entertainment.

Our bar will be open during the event, offering a range of refreshments throughout the evening.

“An English Leonard Cohen” - Sean Laffey, Irish Music Magazine

“A very accomplished multi-instrumentalist.. thoughtful and beautifully constructed

lyrics..infectious..lively..” - Graham Brown, folking.com

“Songs with wings” - Andrew Darlington, RNR

“Bernières’ jagged voice cuts through darkly arresting vignettes full of evocative lyrics. Powerful stuff…” - Mojo

“A great evening yesterday with lots of nice audience feedback.” - Barry Smith, Chichester Festival

“Thank you for such an entertaining evening... beyond our wildest expectations.” Paris Back, Event Organiser

Krazy Horse are a group of motorcycle and car dealerships which were started by Paul Beamish as a hobby when he couldn’t get the bike parts he needed locally.

They have become known for their “Late Night” meets in the Summer where hundreds of motorcycle and car enthusiasts meet.  Now Krazy Horse are partnering with Abbeygate Cinema to create winter “Late Nights”!  Another opportunity to come together and view classic films!

Set against the sexy, glamorous golden age of Formula 1 racing in the 1970s, the film is based on the true story of a great sporting rivalry between handsome English playboy James Hunt (Hemsworth), and his methodical, brilliant opponent, Austrian driver Niki Lauda (Bruhl). The story follows their distinctly different personal styles on and off the track, their loves and the astonishing 1976 season in which both drivers were willing to risk everything to become world champion in a sport with no margin for error.

This multi award-winning show captured recently at the Sadler’s Wells Peacock Theatre is an extraordinary musical journey paying homage to Janis Joplin and her biggest musical influences. Like a comet that burns far too brightly to last, Janis Joplin exploded onto the music scene in 1967 and, almost overnight, became the queen of rock & roll. The unmistakable voice, filled with raw emotion and tinged with Southern Comfort, made her a must-see headliner from Monterey to Woodstock. Fuelled by such unforgettable songs as “Me and Bobby McGee,” “Piece of My Heart”, “Mercedes Benz”, “Cry Baby” and “Summertime”, a remarkable cast and breakout performances. A Night with Janis Joplin, written and directed by Randy Johnson, is a musical journey celebrating Janis and her biggest musical influences—icons like Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Odetta, Nina Simone and Bessie Smith, who inspired one of rock ‘n roll’s greatest legends.

The Impressionists are the most popular group in art history - millions flock every year to marvel at their masterpieces. But, to begin with, they were scorned, penniless outsiders. 1874 was the year that changed everything; the first Impressionists, “hungry for independence”, broke the mould by holding their own exhibition outside official channels. Impressionism was born and the art world was changed forever.

What led to that first groundbreaking show 150 years ago? Who were the maverick personalities that wielded their brushes in such a radical and provocative way? The spectacular Musée d’Orsay exhibition brings fresh eyes to this extraordinary tale of passion and rebellion. The story is told not by historians and curators but in the words of those who witnessed the dawn of Impressionism: the artists, press and people of Paris, 1874. See the show that changed everything on the big screen.

Made in close collaboration with the Musee d’Orsay and National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C.
